COMPANION
ROLE
UI/ UX Designer, Game Designer
PROJECT
Companion was a UI/UX project independently developed for a university assignment. I was responsible for all stages of UI/UX and game design, from research to interactive mock-ups.
DESCRIPTION
Companion was a solo project inspired by Moonlighter and Pokémon. The images below are of the mobile UI mock-ups I created for the concept.
I created my own Companion font for this project (visible in the first two screenshots).
GOALS
-
Design a game and develop its user interface and user experience as an interactive mobile prototype.
-
Create all the assets for the mock-ups, including characters, environments and UI.
-
Develop the gameplay, core and meta loop design.
LEARNINGS
-
I developed the UX with accessibility, player needs and platform in mind.
-
Settings considerations such as dominant hand preferences for controls and language options.
-
Localisation such as using native text to represent languages instead of flag symbols, as they can symbolise multi-language speaking countries rather than specific languages.
-
Platform considerations, such as push notifications for mobile.
-
-
I applied usability heuristics learnings such as meaningful colour palettes to reflect on the player's state or selected menu and aimed for uniformity across screens.
-
Looking back, to improve the UI I would relocate the language selection option to the landing screen to ensure instant accessibility for non-English speakers. I would also improve the consistency of the "Return button" in the main menu to either be written or iconographic, not both.
