INTO THE FOREST
ROLE
UI/ UX Designer, Game Designer
PROJECT
Into the Forest was a UI/UX project independently developed for a university assignment. The project involved UI/UX and game design, from research to interactive mock-ups.
DESCRIPTION
The player ventures into a forest and befriends the mystical creatures within. The forest is supernatural, and a strange phenomenon has begun of portals emerging from the trees and letting outer worldly creatures seep through and distort reality.
You must gather resources and craft weapons to weaken the creatures, then banish them through their portals and seal them off.
You update the map by etching bearings into redwood trees. Tarot cards are also hidden throughout the forest for the player to collect, tainted with advantageous and disadvantageous curses.
Your bestiary updates with each creature encounter.
GOALS
-
Design the gameplay, core and meta loops and UI/UX for PC and console.
-
Create all the assets for a functional prototype.
-
Research and apply accessibility learnings to inform inclusive settings.
LEARNINGS
I focused on creating a user interface which seamlessly integrates with the game's world to enhance immersion and storytelling. Drawing inspiration from titles like Dead Space, I used a book with menu options for diegetic UI, and thematically designed the settings screen in line with the game's tarot card mechanics. I also opted for spatial UI for dialogue boxes to feel less visually intrusive.
